Welcome Mat

The photos above are ones of a welcome mat designed to greet an Israeli immigrant upon his or her arrival into their newfound home on America. The hexagon shape is derived from the center of the Star of David found on the Israeli flag. They vary in size to represent the three basic religions within the country( Islam-green, Christianity-blue, and Judaism-yellow) and the strong belief in the omnipresence of God (Clear). The mat is designed to be placed above the threshold or alond the upper side post of the front door. This placement would resemble that of a Mezuzah, a traditional door piece that signifies God's peace and presence within a house.

Interview Collage

The collage above is one that embodies many of the elements that motivate and drive Jamal Anthony Auelino Parker Suarez. Suarez is a twenty-four year old native of Santiago de Cuba, and has resided here an ongoing fourteen years. He's very proud of his Afro- Cuban and Taino heritage and states that much of his pride was instilled in him from birth and through his grandmother; who is also an indigenous Taino woman.
Suarez's immediate family is comprised of three younger siblings, his mother and father. Suarez states," In my culture, we find strength in our family and hold them higher above everything other than God himself. We especially uphold and value our elderly as they are the strength and wisdom that guide our history."
Suarez arrived to the states with his family in 1994 and is currently a senior undergraduate Market Reasearch student at UNCG.
Future goals for Suarez includes obtaining his MBA , becoming a very successful Realtor, retiring by age forty-five , and traveling the world with his future wife.
Major changes faced with new life in the states includes: food, greater opportunity to earn money and further education, and government.
Challenges included acceptance from other races growing up, overcoming language barriers, and communication with women. ( Claims that approaching women in Cuba is easier due to shared language and culture charateristics.)
Suarez's love of family and financial success drives him to be the best man possible and his strong moral and cultural values prove him to be one of the best that Cuba.

Syd's Response to Computing Article

We as designers work to produce ways to make life more convienient and environmentally sustainable. It's only fair to say that we also design products for ourselves that make our design process more efficient in time, material, and thought. Architectural computing software has given a new face to the way we apply ourselves analytically to design projects, wheteher for better or worse.
After reading the article, I developed new appreciations for the evolution of design technology. Knowing that early approaches to computing design originated in departments of universities inspires me to explore the possibilities of designing programs that fit the unique needs of my generation of designers. This idea also refersback to the subject of innovating technological design material by gradually assessing obstacles faced by specific designers at specific times.
Out of all that has changed, simple clean geometry is still a major focus when producing clean designs. Whether computing, or manually rendering designs, knowing that the basics of design have not completely changed comforts me. In our journey to develop, we can't forget where we started.
